Game Freak has spent over thirty years building one of the best-selling game franchises in history, with every side project remaining firmly in Pokémon’s shadow. Beast of Reincarnation looks different: a tactical action-RPG that reads less like a low-stakes experiment and more like the studio genuinely betting on its own creative voice.

Beast of Reincarnation: what the game actually is

The game follows Emma and Koo, a swordmaster and her canine companion, through a post-apocalyptic world overrun by hybrid beasts born from fauna fusing with flora. A hands-on preview at the BiliBili Game First Look event in Shanghai covered the first two hours of the story and delivered the first concrete impressions of the gameplay. The developer is Game Freak, the studio behind mainline Pokémon titles since 1996.

The core combat system is built around fast sword combos, parries, and finishing moves. Emma also carries a wrist-mounted crossbow for ranged targets. The defining mechanic, though, is Koo: the dog attacks nearby enemies automatically, but pressing a button slows time to a crawl and lets the player choose one of six special abilities. Options include fireballs, roots that burst from the ground to break enemy shields, or vines that bind larger beasts in place while Emma lands katana strikes. Koo’s abilities cost fluorescence points replenished exclusively through synergy with Emma, so the game mechanically rewards coordinating both characters rather than simply alternating attacks.

Game Freak and thirty years of one genre

What makes this project genuinely interesting is not the game itself but the studio behind it. Game Freak is one of the few developers in the industry whose identity is almost entirely inseparable from a single franchise. Pokémon accounts for the overwhelming majority of the studio’s output, and every previous diversification attempt, including Tembo the Badass Elephant in 2015 and Giga Wrecker Alt. in 2019, remained commercially marginal. Beast of Reincarnation looks more ambitious than both of those titles combined.

Visually the game holds up, and early reports describe control responsiveness well above the genre average. Those are precisely the areas where Game Freak’s earlier side projects fell short. If the studio has invested in production values comparable to its mainline Pokémon releases, that represents a meaningful shift worth tracking.

Pokémon DNA in a different body

Even though Beast of Reincarnation sits far from the world of pocket monsters in terms of tone and setting, the underlying design logic is recognizable. The fluorescence point system replenished through partner synergy operates on the same principle as PP in Pokémon: the resource is limited, ability selection carries tactical weight, and players are pushed to think ahead. The enemies described as fauna merged with flora are essentially Bulbasaur’s evolution line reimagined as something closer to horror than to a collectible creature.

Transplanting that design philosophy into an action genre works naturally here because Game Freak has spent three decades building systems around companion mechanics. Beast of Reincarnation moves that expertise into a context where players simply do not expect to find it.

What Beast of Reincarnation signals about Game Freak

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet launched in 2022 to significant criticism over their technical state, and while the series continued to sell without hesitation, the pressure on Game Freak was visible. The studio cannot afford for its only commercially relevant output to be seen as technically behind the curve. Beast of Reincarnation arrives at a moment when Game Freak needs to demonstrate it can ship a high-production-value game without the Pokémon brand as a safety net.

If the game lands well, it opens a realistic path toward Game Freak regularly alternating Pokémon projects with original IP. If it does not, the studio will almost certainly retreat to the security of the franchise and Beast of Reincarnation will become an interesting footnote. The first two hours give genuine reason to think the studio has more than good intentions this time.
